What is intercessory prayer?

Intercession is the act of intervening on another persons behalf. Thus an intercessory prayer is a prayer said on behalf of someone else. It can be a prayer for a friend, a family member or just a person need. One of the earliest examples of intercessory prayers comes from the Book of Genesis when Abraham pleaded with God for the deliverance of the people of Sodom.

The scriptures describe Intercessory prayers as building bridges between God and those we are praying for. This means filling a gap between the person who needs the prayer but is in one way or another unable to pray to our Heavenly Father. For the Catholic faith in particular when making a prayer for intercession we pray to the saints to pray on our behalf, and sometimes we pray for the dead to help them get into Heaven.
